High energy ignition (HEI) is a great thing. More energy means more spark and that means more power. GM built a whole lot of HEI-equipped engines from 1974 to 1990 that went into Chevrolet, Buick, GMC Truck, Olds and Pontiac vehicles.

But… if your ride fits this description and you use it for show or performance recreations, there’s a couple of things that you’re probably not impressed with. The high voltage ignition wires that go from the distributor cap to the spark plugs are a mess. Call it what you want – spaghetti, a basket of snakes or just plain &^#%@.

Actually, there’s more than looks to the issue. Sure, its nice to have all the plug wires lined up and organized with those little plastic combs. Still, when you close the hood, that basket of snakes is feeding on each other. Every place that one plug wire crosses another robs the ignition of a little power. Part is something called cross-inductance and the rest is just leakage from direct contact between the wires.

Both of those issues can be eliminated with ACCEL’s new HEI Corrected Distributor Cap. The result is a neater appearance under the hood because all the wires are correctly ordered so they don’t overlap one another. The new cap is a direct replacement for the original, but with improved design to reduce or eliminate crossfire, arcing and carbon tracking.
