If you’re a muscle car enthusiast, you’ve heard the name Nickey when it comes to high performance Chevrolets. These cars are not only superior in their performance components, they are also highly sought after and collectable cars. If you’ve ever wanted to get your hands on a Nickey car, especially a Camaro, you’re chance to bid on one is coming up in October. Thanks to Mecum Auctions, you could be the proud owner of a prime example of the‘73 Nickey Camaro in the near future.
Nickey Chevrolet opened its doors in the 1920s but didn’t start their performance parts and modification business until 1957. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, Nickey Chevrolet became the highest volume dealer of parts and cars. It was during these years that Nickey created legendary hi-performance Chevrolet muscle cars out of Camaros, Novas and Chevelles. Nickey did this by swapping in powerful big-block engines, numerous performance components and body modifications. Unfortunately, the company shut down in 1977 and it wasn’t until 2010 that we saw the Nickey brand of performance modifications offered on Chevrolets.
The Nickey Camaro up for auction is the only one of its kind. It is a Stage III conversion specifically made for its original owner. The car comes equipped with an LS6 454cui, 450hp engine matted to a four-speed manual transmission. The first owner of the car received the currently equipped four-speed by winning a points championship during the car’s racing years. Also accomplished on the race track with this car was a 10.52-second quarter mile time at 129mph and an 1/8th mile world record time of 8.12 seconds in 1974. In addition to its big-block LS6, the Camaro comes with its Nickey-installed traction bars, rear end, Rocket wheels and Leer Jet 8-track stereo.
The Camaro retains all of its factory sheet metal except for a rear quarter section. It has only been repainted once in its factory-correct Midnight Green color. To prove its authenticity, the Camaro comes with a Nickey Registry certificate of authenticity, and copies of the original Nickey work order, title, invoice, statements of authentication from the original owner and original dealership literature. Copies of the export documentation and Japanese title from its second owner are also included with the car.
This car is a fine specimen of one of the legendary high-performance Camaros Nickey Chevrolet was known for. If you want to bid on this car, it is set to cross the auction block at the Mecum auction in Dallas, Texas. The car will be available for bid on October 8th at 3p.m. We’re sure that this Camaro will get unbelievable attention at the auction. No matter how much this one-of-a-kind Camaro goes for, we hope its new owner will maintain the integrity of its Nickey heritage and not just stuff it away in a garage for the rest of its life.
