Undercover Innovations: Keeping Things Cool Under Your Hood

1200-5

Anyone with a big-block or high performance engine in their car, knows the struggles associated with having a lot of power, and keeping it cool. Sometimes, an overheating problem can be remedied with a newer, bigger, radiator, adding another fan, or any number of other tricks that can be put into play to drop the temperature of your car. While those ideas work, when you start adding up all of the costly additions to your car, you’re in deep. Derel Latta, owner of Undercover Innovations, had the same problem with his big-block-powered 1969 Camaro, but instead of just upgrading the cooling system, he tried something completely different.

Derel did a thorough investigation of the engine compartment and looked at where the air was flowing. He explained to us how he found the holes the air was using to escape without aiding with cooling the engine, and made aluminum panels to direct the airflow where it was needed. “They work by redirecting the air under the hood,” Derel told us. “Instead of flowing out the top or bottom, it goes where it is needed to help keep things cool.” When he made them for his car, he was only doing it to solve a problem of his own, but it wasn’t long before others were asking for the same treatment on their cars.

The panels are as effective as they are attractive, and benefit both cooling and styling of a custom ride. With so much demand locally, Derel threw a few on eBay to test the waters. “We started getting requests for all sorts of cars,” he explained. It didn’t take long before they had an entire line of available options. Derel also realized the demand they were facing required more than just a hobbyist in his garage. At this point he decided to get a larger shop, and make a full time business out of it.

Derel and his cars

“We’ve pretty much put these in every car around here locally,” Derel told us. It isn’t hard to understand why they are installing so many of these. Besides the looks and the effects they have, they are far less costly than any alternative cooling measures you can buy. Just to use a few quick examples, the one piece show covers for a first-gen Camaro, 62 through 67 Nova, or a ’62 Impala all start at the same low price of $101.59. A much lower price than even the cheapest and flimsiest of radiators.

These are also not only licensed by GM, when Derel contacted them in regards to licensing, they offered to license them as original restoration parts, rather than just aftermarket parts with GM logos on them. They don’t just come with a GM logo or Chevy Bow Tie on them, Undercover Innovations can engrave anything on them you like, making these custom covers perfect accents for any custom look. Even if someone else at a show has the same covers for the same car, they will both be uniquely equipped each car.

Now, Undercover Innovations is getting into everything that goes under the hood. They’ve got custom engraved valve covers, firewall covers, hood-stops, their signature show panels, and more. Their company name and signature logo are a real tell-all for what they do.

Do you have one of these helping keep your car cool? If not, maybe you need one? Tell us about the hot ride that you would add these to so that you could help cool it down.
