“In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.” If you are lucky, B.A. Baracus will show up with his 50-pounds of gold necklaces and weightlifting belt driving his Customized GMC van.
The A-Team’s 1983 black and metallic gray GMC Vandura was actually a Chevy G-series van badged with the GMC logo. Customized with the characteristic red stripe with black and red turbine mag wheels and rooftop spoiler, this Van became an icon for the 80s TV-watching generation. The van is so popular that it even has its own website.
The third generation G15 van featured a tilt steering wheel with an automatic transmission. This was the first year that the automatic overdrive was used in the G15 vans. Powered by a 350ci SBC with a two-barrel carb, the van was customized with 15-inch American Racing 14-spoke wheels with 60 Series BF Goodrich Sport Truck T/A radials.
Other custom features included a quad tip exhaust, mobile telephone and radio, sun visor, heavy duty rear air shocks, full front brushbar, fog lights, white bucket seats, shag carpet and a custom gun storage case.
The early season of the show had the van with a red GMC logo on the front grille, and an additional GMC logo on the rear left door. By the early second season, these logos were blacked out. GMC continued to supply vans and receive a credit on the closing credits of each episode.
