The Chevrolet Chevy II Nova was fighting against other brands in the compact car market with decent success but did not see an upcoming battle brewing from within. By 1966, the Chevelle was siphoning off sales of the powerful little compact car. Seeking to retain their fans, Chevrolet brought out the 1966 Nova with the L-79 V8 option. Things were starting to get muscular with the Nova Super Sport.

Only available as a Sport Coupe, the SS was top of the Nova line. Combined with the optional L-79 engine, it was unbeatable. This makes the ’66 Chevy II Nova L-79 number 3 on our top 5 list of Novas.

The Nova saw some exciting changes in the 1966 model year, with external body-styling design changes and new engine options. A 327ci engine rated at 350hp (L-79) was available for the first time. The chassis and mechanical were virtually the same as the previous model years, but the restyling was a refreshing look at the basic compact car.

The L-79 engine option was the big deal. Larger valves, a four-barrel Holley carburetor, high-compression pistons, and a high performance crankshaft saw this engine/chassis combo cross the quarter in 15.1 seconds. With a few mods and tweaks, this compact got into the 13-second range with no problem.

There are few of these examples surviving today, and they are a great choice for any collector, making it worthy of number 3 on our top 5 list of all-time great Novas.
