A pick set is a great set of tools to have. While they don’t have a defined purpose, such as 9/16-inch wrench, they can prove to be a handy tool to have. No, these aren’t the same picks that you use when trying to open up a lock. These are sharp pointed instruments, similar to a dentists tool set.
The picks themselves usually come in a set that has four or more variations. They usually include a straight point, a hook, a 90 degree bend and a smaller hook variation.
What can you use a set of picks for? The possibilities are just about endless. On modern cars that have lots of electrical connectors with clips to keep them secured, a pick with a hook on the end can flip up the clip to remove the connector. If you are trying to remove O-rings a pick is great for being able to hook the O-ring and not lose it.
If you are cleaning a really small part that needs to be scraped, a pick is also great for that. When working on small parts that have numerous components a pick is also a great tool to help place those components or pop them out if needed. Trying to get the rear main seal out of a modern car can be tricky at times, but not with a pick.
When looking to purchase a set, you can pick these up fairly cheap. Most of them have a molded plastic handle on them, like a screwdriver. However, you could buy a dentist style pick set, where its just a smooth metal shaft. This version might allow you to fit the pick into a tighter spot, but the trade off is the grip offered by a larger plastic handle.
