Throwback Thursday: Choosing The Right Optima Battery For Your Vehicle

Wow, another Thursday is already here. That means another week is almost over, and that means it’s time for another Throwback Thursday. Each Thursday, we take a look back in the Power Automedia editorial archives to find an article that we feel needs to be revised. We know how it is—life goes on and we forget about things. This week, I thought we would take a look at upgrading electrical systems. This article, however, isn’t about the wiring or gauges in your car, it’s about the source of that power, the battery.

Back in 2014, we put together an article titled Choosing The Right Battery For Your Vehicle With Optima Batteries. In the initial article, we spoke to the folks at Optima Batteries to find out just which of its products are best suited for a particular application. In a nutshell, do your electrical needs require a REDTOP, YELLOWTOP, or BLUETOP Optima battery? After you read the 2014-published article, you’ll have a better idea and be able to make an educated decision.

Did you know that one of the first things you need to consider is the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)? When starting a vehicle, it requires a quick burst of power—hence, the term CCA. Batteries are specified to provide the proper amount of Cold Cranking Amps for the application, but it’s the need for power when the owner is not attempting to start the car that has driven advancements in battery technology over the last several years.

All Optima batteries are constructed using SPIRALCELL technology. This is vastly different from a traditional automotive battery. Rather than using the flat-plate design, each cell in an Optima battery is spiral-wound with two 99.99-percent pure lead plates (one positive, one negatively charged) coated in lead oxide.

In the original article, you’ll also learn why Starting Lighting Ignition (SLI) is important. What it comes down to, is automotive batteries aren’t just for starting your car anymore and as you can read in the original article, there’s a lot that has to be taken into account when selecting a battery for your daily driver, weekend cruiser, or even your tow rig. Make sure to calculate your electrical system’s requirements and choose wisely.

There is a lot more interesting and sometimes surprising information in the original article, and you really need to check it out. It gives a perspective about proper battery selection. Since there is a lot more information in the original article, I felt, Choosing The Right Battery For Your Vehicle With Optima Batteries would be a great article for this week’s Throwback Thursday showcase. Enjoy!
