What happens when you combine the heart of a modern American sports car with the body of a classic delivery van? It may sound funny but visitors at the New York International Auto Show found out and encountered “The Vettro”. A unique creation aiming to become the world’s fastest food truck.
This unusual vehicle represents a combination of surprisingly different automotive eras. The builder, Luc’s Fajita Hut which serves the New Jersey and New York area, started with the complete chassis, mid-mounted powertrain, and even the largely stock interior of a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51.
They then carefully fitted the unmistakable, rounded body shell from a vintage 1952 International Metro van over the C8 Corvette’s foundation, creating the Vette-plus-Metro mashup aptly named “Vettro”.
While visually striking, its function as a traditional food truck faces limitations. The Corvette’s powerful 6.2-liter LT2 V8 engine and eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sit right behind the driver’s compartment, occupying the space normally dedicated to a kitchen.
Instead of onboard cooking facilities, the Vettro features large side panels that open to reveal serving counters and storage areas. Luc’s Fajita Hut demonstrated it can hold and serve pre-prepared food like fajitas and even house unique items like a Snap-On toolbox cleverly converted into a functional beer tap.
That said, serving food isn’t the Vettro’s only mission. The builders plan to pursue an official Guinness World Record for the highest speed ever achieved by a food truck – a category apparently awaiting its first record holder.
Guinness reportedly informed the team they needed to exceed 130 miles per hour to set the benchmark. This high-speed record attempt targeting over 130 mph is scheduled to take place later this spring at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, planned as part of the festivities surrounding the Indy 500 race on Memorial Day weekend.
Using a C8 Corvette Z51 as the base for a food truck might seem wildly impractical to many observers. Still, the head-turning “Vettro” certainly achieves its goal of drawing attention to the builder’s catering business while showing a truly one-of-a-kind automotive creation that combines modern performance with vintage style in an unexpected but creative way.
