Cousin of the GMC Sierra, the Chevrolet Silverado was introduced in 1999 as the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K line of full-size and heavy duty pickup trucks. According to Autonews, over the next few years, the Chevrolet Silverado will see several major changes that will be transitioned slowly.
One of Chevrolet’s best pickup trucks, the Silverado has sold and enjoyed success through every year of production. Used commercially and domestically, the Silverado has purpose.
Whether you send the Silverado up to the sky or down to the ground, the truck is quite capable, with adequate engine output and towing power. For the 2016 model year, General Motors will most likely refresh the front-end styling of the Silverado, which has been considered as too conservative.
As for 2017, General Motors plans to implement a 10-speed gearbox, which is currently under development. Furthermore, other powertrain enhancements are expected through the life cycle of the truck, with the possibility of a diesel or turbocharged engine.
For 2018, General Motors plans on redesigning the truck for the next generation of the Silverado. Not expected until the second half of 2018, the timetable gives General Motors time to decide whether to rival Ford’s heavily influenced aluminum redesign or make less use of the lightweight material.
With the Silverado providing great power and lasting durability, we hope these planned technological and mechanical advancements only add onto the long list of accomplishments the perennial truck has already earned since its introduction.
