It’s been said that custom cars, like clothing, can go out of fashion quickly. We hate seeing pictures of ourselves from the 80’s for that very reason, and we could say the same about the Pro-Street paint schemes from the 1980’s and 90’s as well.
However, sometimes a build is done with timeless beauty, and the Cam-Aero is one that we feel fits that category well. It was recently sold on eBay to raise funds for the builders wife for $35,000, and the seller claimed that it had participated in several Hot Rod Power Tours and drove just as well today as it did back then.
It was built in the 1990’s by Warren Prout, the owner and Centerline Vehicle Designs as a fully custom-tubed frame mid engine car.
As such the engine is not mounted under the hood, but instead out back using a front-wheel drive engine and trans-axle from a ’75 Old Toronado turned backwards. The 455 was tunes with an Edelbrock intake, Holley carb, and custom-made headers.
If the Cam-Aero looks longer to you than a first gen Camaro, your eyes are not deceiving you. It’s a full 10″ longer than stock and has a 3.5″ longer wheel base. It also sits quite low; the top of the Chevy Lumina grafted-in roof skin roof is a mere 45″ from the ground! All four corners wear coil-over shocks, and while it may be standard to see that on today’s corner carvers, it was high tech when this car was built.
