Stateside Shop Tour: Jimmy Mack Customs In Dickinson, ND

As we venture across the U.S. on our Stateside Shop Tour, we’re focusing on unique shops in all 50 states that do work on Bow Tie cars and trucks. This week’s stop puts us in Dickinson, North Dakota, with Jimmy Mack Customs.

This is the “Daddy’s Shaggin’ Wagon,” belonging to shop owner James Mackey.

Owned by James Mackey, the shop has worked on its fair share of Chevy rides that were a challenge to dream up and then execute. Mackey confesses he’s not yet had a crazy build – like merging an El Camino and a Camaro – but he’s always on the lookout.

Nevertheless, there are two cars worth mentioning that have been the shop’s focus as of late. Both were made in 1962, both are Bow Tie B-bodies, and both have room aplenty for kids, pets, and cargo: the “Momma’s Baggin’ Wagon” (an Impala) and “Daddy’s Shaggin’ Wagon” (a Bel Air).

Momma’s Baggin’ Wagon was purchased for Mackey’s wife, Angie, for schlepping purposes and to give folks a reason to do a double-take as she passed by. It was purchased three years ago with a 1968 Camaro as a package deal, from a family friend. “The guy who owned it before me had thrown a battery in it and drove all the way to Bakersfield, California, and then all the way back,” said Mackey.

The Impala wagon has a 400 cubic-inch small-block and 700R4 transmission.

For modifications, the car was given an air ride suspension, a 700R4 transmission, and a 400 cubic-inch small-block V8. Mackey originally planned to install fuel injection, but opted to keep it carbureted for the sake of simplicity. “We also gave it a Speedway Motors disc brake conversion, as well as a Flaming River rack-and-pinion system,” said Mackey. The interior is going to be reupholstered by So Cool Upholstery in Piedmont, South Dakota, and it’s expected the car will be totally finished within the next three to four weeks.

The Impala wagon is nearing completion with a reupholstered interior on the way, while the Bel Air wagon is all wrapped up.

Meanwhile, the Bel Air was a purchase Mackey made so he could have a “his and hers” station wagon set. The vehicle is complete as of this writing. “Aside from a 327 cubic-inch V8 and a Turbo 350 transmission, the rest of the car is totally original,” explained Mackey. He cut the coils to drop the ride height by 2 inches, and gave the old paint a fresh spray of clearcoat to preserve its old-school coolness. Wheels are tires are Boss Motorsports and Nitto, respectively.

Three more vehicles – two trucks and a Chevelle – are in line to be worked on at Jimmy Mack Customs. We think they’re in good hands, if the station wagons (as well as dozens of other completed builds) are any indication. Check out JMC on its website, and keep it locked here on Chevy Hardcore as we continue our American tour of awesome shops. Next stop: Minnesota!

We know there are hundreds of shops across the country building custom classic Chevys, and we want to hear about them. If you know of a shop building something cool, please let us know about it.
