If you’re a frequent reader, we’re sure that you remember that not too long ago, we featured sportsman racer Bob Gulitti and his mean green 2011 Camaro? As it turns out, his brother Chris Gulitti, has a pretty gnarly Top Sportsman Chevy Camaro of his own.
Like Bob, Chris credits his father for passing on the “disease,” of racing to him as a kid. Chris’s earliest memories revolve around his father taking him to the track where both he and his brother Bob were inspired to eventually drag race themselves. Now, Bob and Chris both pilot two of the most hardcore Chevy Camaros we’ve ever seen – one green and one red.
Chris Gulitti’s first race car was a 1970 Chevy Nova, but the Nova would fall victim to a street racing accident with a friend behind the wheel. This exposure to the dangers of street racing turned both Gulitti brothers away from the street, and to drag strip where they forged a brotherly bond only made stronger by weekends at their home track, Royal Purple Raceway.
While both brothers run truly vicious Chevy Camaros, Chris has opted for a classic over the late model, running a 1968 Camaro. Originally built by Garret Race Cars, the Camaro boasts a 900 cubic-inch fuel-injected engine from Taylor Lastor Race Engines (TRE), that is aided by three nitrous kits. With that much power, the Camaro needs a hefty drivetrain, and Marco Abruzzi at Abruzzi Transmissions provides just that.
The end result is a 1968 Top Sportsman Camaro that is capable of 215 mph in the 1/4-mile, at a blistering elapsed time of 6.50 seconds. (Chris also notes this elapsed time is with two of the nitrous kits still to be fired.)
With a Camaro this lethal, it’s no wonder Chris has notched several notable wins, including NHRA Division 4 Top Sportsman points championships in 2007, 2008, and 2010. The ’68 Camaro also brought home the IHRA Division 4 Top Sportsman points championship in 2001 as well as an IHRA Division 4 bracket finals championship.
Of all the Gulitti family’s wins at drag strips across the country, none stand out more to Chris than his son Cory’s back-to-back Jr. Dragster championships at Royal Purple Raceway in 2014 and 2015. “These easily stand out in my memory bank as the biggest wins in my book,” Chris proudly told us.
Chris’s son Cory is poised to become a third generation force to be reckoned with on the track, as he moves from a Jr. Dragster to a full-size car this November. We’re sure it won’t be long until we’re featuring him as a new sportsman standout in his own right.
Of course, for every sportsman drag racer crazy enough to rocket down the strip in under 7 seconds, there’s a family and crew crazy enough to help them do it. For Chris, it’s his dad George, son Cory, wife Geri, close friend Ed Williams, and obviously, his brother Bob.
If you’re hoping to run a Top Sportsman drag car this summer, chances are you’ll have to line up next to a Gulitti-piloted Camaro. Whether it’s Bob’s 2011 green Camaro or Chris’s 1968 red Camaro, you’ll have your hands full trying to get a win-light against any of the Gulitti’s.
