RK Motors’ ’62 409 Biscayne – Chevrolet’s Unofficial Racer

Of all of the high-performance “sculptures” in automotive to ever come out of the ’60s, the high-optioned post cars are among the most popular. Base in their appearance, these race-optioned “sleepers” had none of the badges or ornaments of higher-optioned cars, like the Super Sport models. But though post racers like this 409 Biscayne look like not much more than a straight-six econo cruiser, they do harbor some of the best race-oriented options that the automaker had to offer.

For example, this ’62 Biscayne from RK Motors in Charlotte, North Carolina is optioned with Chevy’s 409-horse, 409 V8. The 4-speed car chases a set of 4.56 cogs at the rear, and holds this sideways-fast performance package within a two-door post shell that is, to say the least, unassuming. Because the Biscayne is a post sedan and not the streamlined bubbletop that the Impala was, nobody truly realizes, at first sight, how blistering of a race car this 409 Biscayne really is.

One promise that RK Motors does make about the super-stock Biscayne: it’s a car that never unleashes its fury until it opens up its two, four-barrel carburetors, and then it rips like a quarter-mile car should. Unfortunately, the bitchin’ post goes for a price tag that is not so much like 1962, with a hefty asking price of $89,900. Although someone must of deemed it worthy like we do, as the car has already sold.

Though the car, once an affordable street fighter that could be refueled at any pump, is now as astronomical in price as it is in performance, it is still an original 409-powered specimen which is restored to show standards and is more than well-documented. A clean sleeper with plenty of evidence to back its own history, this 409/4-speed Biscayne is a super-stock, dealership floor race car that can be touched by very few.
