Corvette enthusiasts and high-end collectors have a rare opportunity this weekend as an exceptionally preserved 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 prepares to cross the auction block.

Heading to Mecum Auctions’ 38th Annual Spring Classic in Indianapolis this Saturday, May 10, this particular ZR-1 stands out with its incredibly low mileage and unique color combination, representing the peak of fourth-generation Corvette cool!

Not only does this clean Vette sport only 1,179 miles, the car is also an exceptionally clean survivor that features rare Medium Quasar Blue Metallic paint.

According to Mecum, General Motors equipped just 19 1990 Corvette ZR-1s with Medium Quasar Blue Metallic paint. In this case, that pigment contrasts well with a pristine black leather interior that shows no signs of wear or fading.

Naturally, the car’s sale includes an original order form and specifications binder as well as the car’s original ZR-1 ‘pizza box’ that’s filled with a ZR-1 album, video and music cassettes, an emergency key, a key fob and a tire pressure gauge.

Introduced for the 1990 model year after years of development and anticipation, the ZR-1 package transformed the C4 Corvette into a world-beating supercar. The heart of the ZR-1 was the revolutionary LT5 V8.

The 350 cubic-inch, all-aluminum LT5 featured dual overhead camshafts and 32 valves, producing an impressive 375 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque. Mercury Marine’s MerCruiser division in Oklahoma, known for its aluminum expertise, handled the casting and assembly of this unique powerplant.

Beyond the engine, the ZR-1 option included wider rear bodywork to accommodate massive 315/35R17 Goodyear tires, a sophisticated FX3 Selective Ride and Handling suspension system that was developed with Lotus, power leather seats, and premium Delco/Bose audio.

Of course, supercar performance and technology came at a steep price, nearly doubling the Corvette coupe’s base cost and often pushing final sale prices over $100,000, depending on initial dealer markups.

That said, the performance certainly justified the hype, as the ZR-1 could hit 60 MPH in just 4.4 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 12.8 seconds, outperforming contemporary rivals from Ferrari and Lamborghini. Additionally, the car proved much more durable than those exotics, setting numerous speed endurance records.
