There are barn finds, and then there are “barn finds!” This is the latter. Jay Russel of Langley, British Columbia (that’s Canada for all of us Southern Canadians, as some of my Canuck friends refer to us in the U.S.), was searching for a car for his daughter and discovered what has to be the best barn find I’ve heard about in years. This story comes to ChevyHardcore.com from driving.ca, part of the Canada.com network.
The two visited a home where they heard a ’69 Camaro had been sitting around for years. Upon inquiring they were told that the car was being restored and was not for sale. Russel gave up, but then a year later, went back and asked again, only to receive the same answer. Another year later, the persistent Russel went back again, and asked about buying the car. This time, it appeared that the owner had softened a bit. The owner had possibly discovered how much money would be involved in a full resto’ and began discussing a sale.
She had owned it since the car was a year old, parked it in 1996 because of a roof leak and had never driven it since. Russel took one good look and realized he had a nearly priceless Chevy RS SS ’69 Camaro practically in his pocket, but not wanting to rob the owner, paid her a decent price for it. The RS SS model included two packages: an appearance- and a performance-option bundle. The RS package included hidden headlights, revised tail lights with backup lights under the rear bumper, RS badging and exterior bright trim. The SS package offered either a 350 or 396 ci V-8 and chassis upgrades. The SS also came with non-functional air inlets on the hood, special striping and SS badges.
Once the deal was made and the car was trailered home, it received a full tune-up and fluid change. When the key was turned, the engine fired up like showroom new. Russell will eventually do the resto’, but at the time of this report, the car is patina perfect in garnet red, the roof covered by the optional vinyl roof.
