Before the Chevy Impala turned into a glorified grocery getter, it was actually a pretty fantastic car, especially in 1959. With its distinct body lines, tail fins and cat-eye taillights, the ‘59 Model year stands out in many Chevy enthusiasts eyes. But the one that’s heading to Mecum next month makes any regular ‘59 look like a child’s toy. That’s because a 1959 Impala Fuelie car, one of just 19, will make it’s way across the stage at Monterey’s August auction.

Built in the classic era of Impalas, this particular car still carries the typical design cues from 1959, topped off with a classic Tuxedo Black paint job, red interior and chrome trim. But what really sets this car apart is the Rochester Ram Jet Fuel Injection 283/290hp small block V8 under the hood (Boss block code F522CJ).

This very rare engine is backed by a floor-shifted Borg Warner T-10 4-speed manual transmission and a Posi-traction rearend.

The Impala is complimented by black steel wheels, dog dish center caps and period-correct 700-14 BF Goodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires.

In addition to the Chevy’s early full body-off rotisserie restoration, the engine was overhauled using factory specifications by Auto Power Machine in Riverside, California. The fuel injection system was also repaired, recalibrated and tested by Chuck Smith of Valley Center, California. Three separate automotive publications can attest to the legitimacy and caliber of this rare car.

Inside the Impala, you’ll find a two-toned red interior complete with AM radio, electric clock and heater. There’s nothing over the top here, but that’s exactly how we like to see it.
