The Daytona Yellow is the perfect color for this iconic power cruiser.
A few months ago, we showed how officially endorsed, first-gen Camaros were once again becoming available. You can check out the announcement article right here. Thanks to a company called Brand New Muscle Cars (BNMC) you can design and order your favorite classic-muscle Camaro hand-built from scratch with an all-new metal body and parts, or they will work with your original body shell if that’s what you want. The all-new body shells are supplied by R3 Performance Products of Yucca Valley, California. “They’re bodies are extra straight, inside and out. They use jigs in all areas, inside and out, up, down, front, back, top, bottom, window openings, etc.,” according to David W. Miller II of BNMC.
When we last saw the Yenko, it was in the early stages of having the sheetmetal fitted and aligned, and the front and rear suspension mocked up.
We decided to check back and see what progress has been made, and it looks like things are moving along nicely. “In your first update, we showed everyone the body from R3 Performance, front and rear suspension from Chris Alston’s Chassisworks, steering from ididit, and the six-piston, 13-inch disc brakes from Wilwood,” stated Dave Miller III, president of Brand New Muscle Car.
Since then, the guys have taken the car back apart and did all the panel alignment to make sure all the body lines and panel gaps were perfect. This included a lot of test fitting, opening and closing of doors, hood, trunk lid, hinges, latches, strikers, etc. A tedious process to be sure.
Once that was done, “We then put the car back together and did all the body work and made sure there were no dents, dings, waves, etc., to make the car complete straight inside and out, up, down, left, right, etc.,” said David.
They then put the car back together and primed it, block sanded it, primed it again, and sanded it again to make sure all the surfaces were perfectly smooth. “The longest part of the paint process is the preparation. Pulling the trigger takes a day, getting ready to pull the trigger takes weeks, if not months,” quipped David.
Next on the agenda is to install the 550hp, all-aluminium ZL1 big-block that has been tuned by Proformance Unlimited. The monster will be fed by a Holley Sniper EFI, and will be cooled by Champion Cooling Systems.
The car is finally covered in the original shade of Daytona Yellow by Christopher Edwards and the paint experts from Axalta (DuPont) Coating Systems, who joined the group to mix up the new Cromax EZ waterborne paint. As you can see, the body turned out beautiful, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
