Ford Motor Company has openly stated that they will be offering an Eco-Boosted 4-cylinder of the Mustang in 2015. This is part of a strategy to ramp up sales overseas and to comply with rules and regulations. Does that mean that Chevrolet will follow suite and offer a 4-cylinder version as well? They have done it before in some of the 3rd Gen Camaros.

You can breathe a heavy sigh of relief: GM Authority confirms that Chevy has no plans to disgrace the 6th Gen Camaro’s with a 4-cylinder. “We’re not following Ford.” This good news came straight from GM’s Chief Engineer, Al Oppenheiser. “As long as they’ll pay me to be the chief engineer, I’m going to fight for every horsepower I can and every cylinder I can.” Sounds like his plans are more horsepower, not less. He also stated that he feels if you downsize the motors in these Camaro’s that it won’t be a Camaro anymore. “We’ve established what the Camaro is. And if the Camaro ceases to become a Camaro, you’ve got to consider, do you take Camaro out in the future” says Oppenheiser. All good news for Camaro and V8 fans.
The bad news is that with Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards jumping to 37.8MPG company wide in 2016 from 27.5MPG set in 1990, other lines may change. For example the new Malibu’s will only be offered in a 4-cylinder version with no 6-cylinder option available. Ford has started to offer V6 trucks with EcoBoost to meet standards while Chevy has implemented newer technology such as direct injection, cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing to save those V8 trucks. So for now, our precious V8 high horsepower Camaros will be saved.
