Crime doesn’t pay, except when it does. So what would you do if you’re a drug lord, with millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains? Spend it frivolously on high-priced items, of course. How does a $100,000 watch sound, or maybe a collection of classic Chevys to splurge that surplus cash on? Either way, you’d better enjoy your blood money while you can, as the authorities are never far behind.
Fox News Latino reports that ICE authorities seized about $3.2 million worth of luxury watches and classic sports cars including, get this, a “jet fuel-powered Camaro.”
We’re not sure if that’s just some misinformed reporting, or if these drug lords just went over the top, but a jet fuel-powered Camaro certainly is a sign of excessive wealth. The sting operation was carried out by the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency in Puerto Rico against the largest Caribbean drug gang, formerly led by José Figueroa-Agosto.
Figueroa-Agosto has been re-arrested after eleven years on the lam from authorities. It was estimated that his organization controlled as much as 90% of the drug trafficking between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. In other words, there was a lot of money involved, enough to purchase a $1 million collection of luxury watches, as well as 16 classic and exotic cars worth another $2.2 million.
That includes this mystery Camaro designed to run on jet fuel. Perhaps they mean race fuel? There are differences, depending on the exact breed of jet or racing fuel you are comparing (there are oh-so-many these days.) With a value of just $75,000 though, we were expecting something a little more over-the-top, maybe with a rocket boost sitting in the trunk. Some shots of the rest of the collection would have been nice as well. Too bad it belongs to Uncle Sam now. Guess crime really doesn’t pay, does it?
