Hot Rod Drag Week 2013 Tracks And Schedule Announced!

Hot Rod Magazine
‘s brutal, test-of-the-best event, Drag Week, always draws out the most awesome street cars in the country for the torture test of racing on four different racetracks while making the drive, unassisted, between all of them.

This year, the event will be held at four different Midwest tracks – Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky; Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis; Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, and Memphis International Raceway in Millington, Tennessee. The event runs from September 8th through the 13th with a rain date of the 14th if necessary. Each competitor is forced to run the entire week from track to track without the benefit of a support vehicle, and many of the quicker cars often are set up to tow a small trailer behind stuffed to the gills with support parts, extra tires, and a hope and a prayer.

It truly is a test of man and machine; last year’s event covered 1,400 miles over the five-day competition, and the ultimate class was won by perennial competitor Larry Larson and his unbelievable ’66 shoebox Nova, who finished the competition with an average elapsed time over the event of 7.0622 – just .0092-second ahead of Jeff Lutz’s ’57 Chevy’s 7.0714. Both competitors carried an average top speed through the traps of over 200 MPH – an insane feat for a real, street-driven machine. Of course, both cars are not just street-driven, but fully scienced-out drag beasts put together by two of the finest names in the business – Larson and Lutz both make their living putting together racecars of the highest order for paying customers out of their respective shops, so it’s only fitting that their own machines can compete at this level.

The event puts together competitors in a variety of classes from Unlimited to Pro Street to Daily Driver, both with and without power-adders, and only 200 competitors will receive invitations to compete. With this year’s event taking place in the middle of the country, expect players near and far to make an appearance – even Darryl Johnson’s awesome Duster that we wrote about just a short while ago. Will you be there?
