The automotive media is still pining for GM to bring back the Z28 Camaro. Remember when everybody got excited at the car we thought was the Z28, only it turned out to be the Camaro ZL1? We do. We got excited and then disappointed once more when the Camaro 1LE also forewent the Z28 moniker.
Yet there is a sense of certainty that the Camaro Z28 will be making a triumphant return, and sooner rather than later. So let us fan those flames and join the rumor mill in celebrating GM Authority’s latest Z28-related find. They came across a recent trademark application filed by one General Motors for the “Z28,” leading to further speculation that the Camaro Z28 is just over the horizon.
When we say recent we mean just a few days ago. GM put in a trademark application on September 7th for “Z28,” a move that often precipitates that actual launch of a new car. The same thing happened with the not-ready-to-be-revealed Chevy SS sedan, of which Internet sleuths uncovered ample evidence both via trademarking and OnStar.
Of course, GM being GM, they will hem and haw and deny the whole thing until they’re blue in the face. Yet GM has made great strides in listening to what customers say…and those customers who can’t afford a $55,000 Camaro ZL1 want a more afford performance package for their Camaros. The Z28 could be that car, with the same emphasis on track racing as Ford’s Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition.
Or it could just end up being a tarted-up Camaro SS. Either way, it seems all but certain that a Camaro Z28 model is in the near future.
