Switching to an EFI fuel system sounds like a great idea but many enthusiasts in the past have discovered that there is a lot involved in the swap. What they thought would be a simple swap of the carb with a new “self-contained” EFI system ended up being a full fuel-system-upgrade that included fuel pumps, lines, filters, gauges, and clamps. FiTech has come up with a pretty neat solution to prevent the project from becoming a nightmare.
Traditional carburetor-style fuel systems typically have engine driven fuel pumps that operate at a lower pressure than will support electronic fuel injection systems. Chevrolet low-pressure fuel systems have the fuel pump driven from a lobe on the camshaft, which limits the pressure that can be generated by the fuel pump.
Since EFI systems demand a higher pressure fuel system with return lines, pre-filters and high pressure lines. that becomes a sticking point for many enthusiasts to not use it. But FiTech’s Fuel Command Center is a game-changer that allows the enthusiast to retain the conventional low-pressure system, but still meet the high pressure needs of a modern EFI system upgrade.
According to the folks at FiTech, the Fuel Command Center Assembly can be mounted in the engine compartment, or anywhere on the chassis if space is limited. The low-pressure fuel line that feeds the carburetor is connected to the “IN” port on the assembly, and a high-pressure fuel hose that is supplied with the assembly, is plumbed from the assembly to the high pressure inlet port on the EFI system. It’s that simple
The system operates by having the stock low-pressure fuel pump feed fuel into the assembly’s fuel sump-tank. A high-pressure fuel pump is submerged inside the sump that supplies fuel under pressure to the EFI system. A float controls how much fuel is allowed to enter the sump by automatically stopping the fuel from entering the sump tank when the correct fuel level is reached.
With the engine running, the Fuel Command Center pumps fuel to the EFI system at the correct pressure range, while running cooler and quieter than most, because the pump is submerged. Ultimately, FiTech’s new Fuel Command Center eliminates the need for plumbing new lines and buying expensive fittings to configure the fuel requirements for an upgraded EFI system.
It is capable of delivering enough fuel to supply an engine with up to 800 horsepower. The Fuel Command Center can be used with any aftermarket or factory EFI installation.
