Extremely Rare ’69 U.S. Grand Prix Camaro Pace Car For Sale At RK

The 1969 United States Grand Prix is known by many as one of the most historic Formula 1 races to date. Not only did this event bring about an amazingly complicated competition, it also brought about a single unique pace car- a special ‘69 Camaro SS convertible. Although the race is long in the past, its history lives on and thanks to RK Motors, you can own the very Camaro that paced the historic field 42 years ago.

The 1969 U.S. Grand Prix was historic in itself. Of the 18 drivers and cars that started the race at the Watkins Glen Racing Course in New York, only six finished with just two competitors completing all 108 laps. Unfortunately for most drivers, mechanical issues with their cars bumped them out of the race, while others were involved in accidents. Of the drivers, only two Americans, Mario Andretti and Pete Lovely, drove in the event but both were among the drivers that retired from the race early due to issues. In the end, Jochen Rindt won with a time of 1 hour 57 minutes and 56.84 seconds, the first time an Austrian driver had won the Grand Prix. The ‘69 Grand Prix also brought about a record setting payout to drivers with a purse of $206,000 which included a $50,000 payout to the Rindt for winning the race.

With this much history, it is plain to see why the ‘69 Camaro that paced the race is so unique. Being the only pace car for the event, it not only paced the American Grand Prix, it also got quite a bit of use at the race, unlike some pace cars, due to all the crashes and breakdowns.

To pace the race efficiently, the Camaro was equipped with a L78 396cui big-block engine with a solid lifter camshaft, an 11 to 1 compression ratio, forged rotating assembly and rectangular port heads. Although the engine has been rebuilt, it is the original numbers-matching block. The Camaro also retains its original TH400 automatic transmission and 12-bolt rear end.

Refinished in its original Dove White color with black SS stripes, the Camaro has been completely restored to its ‘69 pace car specifications and even features an authentic black and white Formula 1 graphics package. The Camaro sports freshly restored chrome and trim, a new black convertible top, refurbished emblems and a blacked-out tail panel. The car also features a custom black interior with wood-grain details and a rosewood steering wheel.

Whether you’re a Formula 1 fan, Camaro fan or just an avid car enthusiast, you can’t go wrong with this pace car. While there were a few reproduction pace cars created, this car is the real deal and even comes with a letter of authentication. Add that to the fact that the car was restored to its 1969 configurations and includes a number of original, numbers-matching parts, and the Camaro is definitely worth every penny of the $199,00 asking price.
