eBay Find of the Day: Custom 1962 Impala Super Sport

The heyday of the full-sized American sedan was waning but Chevrolet had a few more surprises coming before the sled was dead. The big block 409 engine, introduced in 1961 was a hands-down success… so much so that, for 1962, Chevrolet made the engine available across all full-sized models – Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne.

When equipped with dual Carter AFB four-barrel carburetors, a special solid-lifter camshaft and lighter valve train, the thundering V8 was rated at 409 horsepower, giving it the same magical one-hp-per-cubic-inch status that had only been achieved previously by the fuel injected Corvette’s 283 V8 in 1957.

In 1962, four hundred was an enormous amount of horsepower for any car, never mind one received direct from the factory. Regardless, the Impala was still hampered by its weight when it came to factory stock drag racing. In those circles, the move was toward the lighter Bel Air and Biscayne models. For street use though, the Impala Super Sport remained top of the heap in style and power.

The custom version shown here has taken that style and power up a couple of notches. According to the seller, the engine has ben bored .060″ over, and now displaces 463 cui. It connects to a Borg -Warner Super T10 manual transmission with a Centerforce LMC clutch and feeds into a 4.11 ratio, Positraction Differential Equipped rear axle.

Ross Racing pistons and a Isky competition cam were added, as well as dual Carter 4-barrel carbs on a polished intake manifold. In fact, looking under the hood of this Chevy, you’re not going to see a lot but the glare from polished metal, like the valve covers, accessories and 4-row aluminum radiator with electric fan.

There’s a whole lot more going on with this car than we can fill you in on here, so if you want all the details, head on over to the eBay listing. Located in San Bernardino, CA, the car did not sell despite a high bid over $32K. You can still contact the Seller using the Ask a Question link, under the Seller Info heading.

If you’re not in the area and can’t swing a West Coast trip to check this ride out personally, consider having an independent inspection and report done. We’re not saying anything about this particular car, but when it comes to doing business over the Internet, it just makes common sense.
