The Chevrolet El Camino was a lot of things; half car, half truck, all mullet if you ask us. But one thing nobody would ever accuse the El Camino of being was a luxury car. In addition to being a part of GM’s “bargain brand”, the El Camino was designed primarily with utility and style in mind, but not opulent comfort. That was more the realm of GM’s luxury marque, Cadillac, which offered its own take on the truck with the Escalade SUV.
Few people have ever considered combining an Escalade with an El Camino, but the idea took root with one builder, who has put his baby up for bid on eBay. Depending on what angle you view it from, the El Cadimino almost looks, dare we say, good?
That’s only if you’re view in from the back end, however, as the combination fo El Camino headlights with a massive Escalade grille does the 1980s combination car/truck no favors. The back end has benefitted from a seriously nice paintjob, along with the addition of El Dorado-style tailights and a swooping ridge along the bed that gives the El Cadimino a very hot rod-like flavor.
Unfortunately, this El Camino-cum-Cadillac is all show and no go, stuck with the original (and anemic) 305 TPI engine this ‘85 Chevy originally came with. So despite hauling around all that extra bodywork, performance is somewhere in the Chevy Spark region. But shove an all-aluminum LS1 engine under the hood, some nice leather seats, and maybe we’ve got an El Cadimino worth driving.
