A rare find on eBay dubbed the 1978 Chevrolet “Other” in the auction description definitely lives up to it’s title. This awesome 1978 Chevy Chevette with 427 big block Chevy engine turned up and we couldn’t help ourselves but to do a little feature on it for our readers — we know how you love these rare finds!
The seller starts out by offering up that it’s “A Chevette on Steroids, not a Corvette”, but I’d like to see the person who mistakes a Chevette of any year for a Corvette of any year, personally. Hold off your hate mail, they’re cool little cars, but I don’t look at them and think “Corvette”, but that’s just me. Moving on.
More interestingly than not being a Corvette, this Chevette started off as an all original car with only two previous owners. The seller points out that the car was garage kept its entire life and kept in excellent condition, making restoring of trim parts and little things a breeze. The interior was restored using the original plaid design and the car got new everything inside.
Now for what you really care about: what’s under the hood. Stuffed in the engine bay is a big-block 427, built with L88 heads, solid lift cam, high performance intake, and a 780 carb.
This beast of an engine along with the four core radiator and twin cooling fans looks right at home. It’s also backed by a turbo 400 with 3800 stall torque converter, and the power runs into a 12-bolt posi with 3.90 gears. The suspension has also been beefed up to handle the weight of the new motor.
When I read this, I think of someone putting together a light-weight track car, but the seller clearly states that it was built for cruise nights and car shows, bummer.
With a highest big right over twenty-grand, the auction ended without finding this sleeper a new owner, but we’ll keep our eyes out for a re-listing.
