With the use of various colors being a large part of fashion, artwork, trends and even how movies make us feel (think of the movie 300), it would be crazy to think that color is not also a major factor in the automotive industry. But we’re not just talking about your Brick Red, Arctic White, Gloss Black and Silver Metallic. We’re talking about the various special edition hues that car manufacturers have come out with over the years to grab our attention and drive sales, the latest being Chevy’s special edition colors.

One of the contributors to the modern world of high-impact hues is Chevy Creative Designer for Exterior Paint, Krysti Murphy. Recently, she wrote an article for GM’s Fastlane publication detailing what drives the creation of the unique special edition color schemes available right now on popular Chevy models, and the influences aren’t exactly what you might think.

While artwork and current color trends would certainly be on our list of guesses, folks like Murphy also turn to the fashion industry, furniture finishes, sporting equipment and even popular shoe designs for color inspiration.

Some of the most recent colors to break onto the automotive scene under the Chevy brand include Cool Blue, Luscious Pink, Deep Magenta Metallic and Dragon Green. Among the vehicles being outfitted with these special color options include the Spark, Sonic and even the Camaro.

“When we are developing a new color, like the Magenta Metallic, we try to design something that both the male and female consumer will like,” Murphy explained in her Fastlane contribution.

“After we’ve developed a color, we’ll create renderings of the vehicles to confirm that the color works on a larger canvas. It’s also important for us to ensure the color will last longer than one fashion season.”

With more and more Chevy customers coming from loud and proud generations, vivid colors like the Fuschia hues and attention-grabbing greens seem to have more appeal in the industry than one might have expected. We certainly don’t expect to see lines of Deep Magenta Metallic Camaros in parking lots in the future, but don’t be too surprised if you start to see more and more hot-hued Chevys in your neighborhood soon!
