While the 1950s and 1960s may have belong to American automakers, by the end of the 1970s Japanese automakers were starting to seriously eat into Detroit’s market monopoly. They did so in subtle ways though, offering fuel-efficient compacts and six cylinder-powered sports cars. The Nissan 240Z is a perfect example of an early Japanese sports car with a dedicated following, though the performance has never been on part with what American muscle could offer.

Still, these old Z cars are easy on the eyes, and they’ve been around long enough that doing a V8 engine swap is almost passe. For sale in Tennessee is this beautiful 1971 Datsun 240Z, one of the earliest Japanese sports coupes to hit the American market. With a Chevy 383 stroker engine in place of the inline-six engine, this Datsun is a perfect example of East and West combining to building an awesome car.

Gone is the original 150 horsepower inline six, and in its place Chevy 383. While the ad doesn’t mention power numbers, with a Victor Jr. intake manifold, a Holley double-pumper carburetor, a roller camshaft, and many other engine upgrades, this motor should be good for at least 350 horsepower and 400 ft-lbs of torque, if not more. In a 2,400 pound Nissan Z-Car, that spells a whole lot of get-up-and-go.

But this 240Z is more than just a light ride with a big engine. A disc brake conversion provides superior stopping power, and numerous aluminum body and mechanical parts have been used to conserve weight and make it look even cooler. With a five-point racing harness and four-point roll cage, safety is also taken into consideration. While $15,000 is nothing to laugh at, this would be one wickedly fun ride to drive to all the local car shows. This is Far East muscle done right.
