Chevrolet Delays New Impala, Replaces Drivetrain

Oh, how the mighty have languished. The once subject of Beach Boy lust and full-sized muscle cruisers, the current Chevrolet Impala has remained in cryostasis remaining largely unchanged since its W-body platform introduction in 2006. And in case you were wondering, the W-body platform dates back to 1988. Ugh.

There was a slight glimmer of hope as leaked documents from an undisclosed UAW member within General Motor’s Canadian Auto Worker union were landed by GMInsideNews, suggesting that an all-new Impala would hit the showrooms in February of 2013 as a 2014 model year car. Now, several sources tell GMI the launch date has been delayed by several months.

The delay is expected to kill off the last remaining W-body vehicles over to the new Cadillac XTS platform, namely the Global Epsilon Platform. In the meantime, GM will reportedly drop its choice of two V6 plants, in lieu of its more efficient 3.6-liter V6 plant and a six-speed automatic as a band aid until the full redesign comes around.

Of course, no word has been given to the future of the SS model, as it was killed for 201o, leaving only the LS, LT and a LTZ trim levels.
