Throwback Thursday: What Makes Boom Mat Special? Here Comes The Boom

Boom Mat

Another week is almost over, and once again, Thursday is upon us. That means it’s time for us to celebrate another editorial throwback. Each week, we jump into the way back machine and open the Power Automedia vault that houses our vast collection of editorial gems and revisit a great article.

In this Throwback Thursday, we’re taking a step back in time to bring you an article that you guys might have either forgotten about, or might not even know exists. Whichever the case, we are certain that you will enjoy this editorial flashback. So without further ado, let’s take a look back at an article that gives you some much-needed tips when it comes insulating and sound-proofing your hot rod: What Makes Boom Mat Special? Here Comes The Boom: An Expansive Line.

In this article, Bobby Kimbrough works with Design Engineering Inc. (DEI) to show readers how they can enjoy their hot rods and avoid suffering with external sounds that are similar to being inside a submarine while the tin benders are pounding rivets into the hull.

In the original article, he showcases DEI’s Boom Mat, which is a product that dampens vibrations in sheetmetal caused by road rattle, engine noise, or bass vibrations from audio equipment. This noise dampening allows the driver and passengers to enjoy the sound waves that they would rather hear.

There are a few steps that you can take to ensure great results, and Mike Zenone of DEI explained that the first place to start is with Boom Mat damping material. This product comes in 12-inch by 12 1/2-inch and 12 1/2-inch by 24-inch sheets of pure butyl rubber. Butyl is an odorless – and probably tasteless – material, however, Bobby did not do a taste test to confirm the latter. We do know that scientific studies show butyl has excellent impermeability characteristics, and the polymer makeup gives the material great flexibility.

Bobby gets more in-depth, but you’ll have to check out the original article to get all the information. We’re certain you’ll be glad you did. Since there are probably a lot of enthusiasts that would love to drown out unwanted noise – be it in their classic or daily driver – I thought this a great piece for this week’s Throwback Thursday column. So, check it out and learn how the gathered information from Design Engineering Inc., can help your hot rod after you check out: What Makes Boom Mat Special? Here Comes The Boom: An Expansive Line.

If you would like to learn even more and check out some real-world testing and results, then you need to check out Keeping Your Interior Cooler And Quieter With Design Engineering Inc. Not only does it show an install of the DEI products, but there is also real world decibel and thermal testing to show how well it works.
