Checking out the sights at the 2015 Goodguys Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona, we spotted Mel Medina’s custom 1957 Chevy Nomad. Traveling from Alcalde, New Mexico, not only did the Rocket Red paint on Mel’s car initially draw us in, but once we got closer, its bevy of features inside and out, made us take a longer look.
“It’s as fast as it looks,” Mel said. “I didn’t really try to change too much on this Tri-Five. I focused more on getting some serious power under the hood, and I think its more than enough.”
Speaking of under the hood, Mel dropped in one of the General’s LS6 V8 engines that produces 405 horsepower, adding a modern touch to an American classic. Power meets the pavement with a Tremec five-speed manual transmission. Built on an all-polished Newman C4 Corvette chassis, this Tri-Five masks all its capabilities beneath its vintage shell. Not to mention, a Corvette brake system all the way around provides plenty of stopping power for this speedy classic.
Mel’s wagon sits just right on a set of 18-inch Billet Specialties Qualifier rims, wrapped with Goodyear Eagle F1 ruuber. The wheels help to compliment the lustrous chrome trim and fenders, which are immaculate, rust-free, and shined to perfection.
To endure the hot days in New Mexico, Mel installed a Vintage Air air conditioning system to battle the grueling heat, as well as keep his Adobe-colored leather interior rich and conditioned. Also inside of Mel’s custom wagon is Classic Instruments telemetry and a matching Adobe color dash, shifter, and steering wheel to complete the overall package.
