After a while of writing about cars, you start to think that you’ve seen everything. Sure, an odd engine swap here or a custom body kit there might cause us to do a double take, but rarely do we see an automotive contraption that causes us to stop whatever we are doing and stare with amazement. We thought that ’57 wagon/pickup was the end-all, be-all of oddities, until we saw this thing.
Bangshift discovered, somewhere, a 1933 Chevy Coupe “trike” with a supposed 700 horsepower for sale. Is there no end to what people will do?
The ’33 Chevy is an immensely popular car for customizing and hot rodding, and with good reason; even today, it blends seamlessly with cars from all eras. The ’33 coupe has been around for almost eighty years, so we thought everything that could be done, has been done by now. How wrong we were. As the story goes, it is apparently cheaper to register a 700 horsepower motorcycle (which trikes fall under) than a 700 horsepower street rod, so the builder ditched two wheels for one.
It actually looks rather awesome, like something a ‘30’s supervillian might drive. Toss a few rocket launchers or a hood-mounted machine gun on there, a couple of gangsters in the rumble seat, and Dick Tracy might just have his hands full. But in real life, we wonder how it would handle on the roads. As Bangshift points out, this trike sacrifices a lot of contact with the ground, and we’re not sure that lonely front brake is up to stopping the rest of this odd rod. Most of the braking is done by the front wheels, and 700 horsepower can make for a lot of speed. If something goes wrong, you’re pretty much guaranteed a rollover, and we don’t see a roll cage.
