The old saying goes, “the third times a charm.” For Mike Simpson, that was ten fold as this A-body is the 30th Chevrolet that he has owned. Residing from Elk River, Minnesota, Simpson proudly stated that, “It’s not for sale. I’ve built my dream car.”
Simpson started by asking The BLOCK for a single photo of his car, which they ended up shooting a full feature. He’s very proud of his SS tribute, and he has lots of reason to be. With the car not being a real Super Sport, Simpson built the car to his liking.
At first glance you notice a timeless red 1970 Chevelle SS with a set of wheels on it. When you dig below the surface you’ll find some great modifications to make this into a great restomod.
What made the 1970 Chevelle SS King of the Hill? The motor. While a naturally aspirated LS6 doesn’t reside in the engine compartment, a 6.0 liter modern LQ4 motor does. The engine was upgraded with an LS6 intake and 2001 ZO6 camshaft to wake up the motor a bit. Backing the LS is a 4L65E, matching up perfectly to the motor. In order to get all that horsepower to stop, a complete set of Corvette brakes were installed. To get the car to handle as well as it went, a Global West suspension was installed up front and a RideTech kit was installed out back.
The rest of the car remains factory, including the bucket seats and console adorning the interior. The bucket seats do wear 1971-1972 upholstery, but the rest of the interior remains looking factory. At the end of the day, why mess with perfection?
