SEMA 2020: Borgeson’s Space-Saving Steering Shaft For GM Vehicles

The popularity to swap engines into GM’s G-body, F-body, and S10 vehicles has carried each of these car lines into the modern age. At some point, both old and new need to meet in agreement. There have been numerous products created to directly address filling in all the necessary bolt holes and hoses to make the swap possible, but many auxiliary systems were left up to the enthusiast to provide the necessary clearance.

One such issue that can easily get in the way of performance upgrades is the rag joint used on many vehicles. While it does a good job of reducing any vibration from going up the steering column and into the driver’s hands, they were also prone to decay and their somewhat small size always seemed to be in the wrong place at the right time.

The new Borgeson shaft still utilizes features such as a telescoping shaft and vibration damping. It also replaces worn and unsafe rag joints with zero-play universals and a vibration-damping lower universal joint for comfort.

Borgeson has introduced its new performance steering shaft for 1978-1988 GM G-body, 1982-1992 GM F-body, and 1982-1993 S10 pickups. The new steering shaft assembly replaces the original steering shaft, eliminating the rag joint for additional header clearance, and provides a precise zero play connection from the steering column to the steering box.

High-quality Borgeson universal joints are used to remove any play in the assembly and a Borgeson vibration-damping universal is used to connect to the steering box, thereby eliminating any vibrations from reaching the driver.

OEM steering shafts used a rag joint to reduce unwanted vibration from carrying up the steering shaft into the cabin, but they are prone to decay, which introduces excessive and unsafe play in the car’s steering. Vibration is still controlled with the Borgeson shaft by a vibration-damping lower universal. The telescopic shaft is then free to carry the driver’s wishes directly from the steering wheel to the steering box thanks to solid, zero-play universal joints at the top and bottom of the shaft.

The shaft also utilizes a telescoping design to carry the same safety and utility of the original unit. The telescoping and vibration-damping shaft is made from paintable steel construction and has four inches of movement. The shaft will telescope between 15.5-inches to 19.5-inches in length to ease installation.

The Borgeson assembly has 4-inches of adjustment, making installation a snap, thanks to this telescoping section in the shaft. A rubber boot keeps contaminants out of the moving parts.
