Do Your Bidding: 10 Chevys To Watch For At Upcoming Mecum Auction

Ed:Op Top 10 MecumThe snow is melting and automotive enthusiasts are once again getting their cars out of winter storage. That can only mean one thing, it’s automotive auction time once again. Each year, thousands of enthusiasts flock to the auction tents, and once again, the Mecum auction will host one of those tents, as they return to Houston’s NRG Park from April 9-11, 2015. As one would expect, they are bringing more cars again this year, more than you can shake a stick at. With a car count (as of this writing), that exceeds over 1,000 American musclecars, Corvettes, classics, hot rods, and more set to cross the auction block, there will definitely be something for everyone.Screen Shot 2015-03-31 at 6.53.33 PM

With all of those cars available for anyone to buy and drive home, how does one actually choose a single car?  If you have ever watched a Mecum auction on television, you know how intense the bidding—and the entire event for that matter, can actually be. In an environment like that, it’s hard for anyone to maintain their focus. But, if you are planning to attend an auction, and before you actually begin to bid on a car, you should remain a little level-headed, and be positive about what you’re hoping to buy.

If you’re looking for a certain model car that brings back feelings of nostalgia, your emotions can play a good—and bad, role in your decision. Going into an auction with a clear head is mandatory, as bidding fever has cost a lot of people a lot of unnecessary money.

We were really hoping that we would be able to attend the Houston auction, but with the work schedule what it is, and the wife hiding the checkbook, it became evident that we would have to pass on attending this year.

But, that didn’t mean that we couldn’t peruse the Mecum website to take a look at what would be available. In hindsight, that might not have been such a good idea. But, while sitting in front of the computer screen and dreaming, we thought that we would pick what we felt were our top 10 Chevrolet cars from the auction. These are not necessarily the top 10 cars of the auction, but rather, ones that we thought we would like to own.

Although we can’t physically make it to Mecum’s Houston auction, we are hopeful that you can. Attending a full-scale event auction like this is a must-do, at least once, in every car guy’s lifetime. The Mecum event is open to everyone, and general admission tickets are available at the gate for $20 per person, per day. Take your kids with you, as children 12 years old and younger can get in for free.

If you are actually looking to bid, registration is $100 and includes admission for two people, for all three days. The “doors” open each day at 8 a.m., and the auction begins at 10 a.m.

If you can swindle the checkbook from your wife, and you do happen to get the chance to attend the auction, let us know if you are the lucky person that happens to purchase one of the cars (or truck), that happen make our top 10 list. We’d like to know what your plans are to do with it, and see if maybe you could find it in your heart to let us take it for a ride. We’ll be gentle, we promise.

Lot F108 Haulin’ Heavy

One of our choices was easy, since we would love to own this 1963 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible. This beauty comes with a 340 horse 409ci, backed by a Powerglide automatic transmission and a 3.08-geared rear. Sure, a four speed would have put the icing on the cake, but the ability to lower the roof makes up for it. The silver-blue exterior is complemented by a blue interior with bucket seats, console, padded dash, and power top and windows. Minor upgrades include a Flowmaster dual exhaust and a hidden Pioneer AM/FM/CD player.

5Lot F119 Monster Mover

Who wouldn’t want to own one of the 4,475 LS6 Chevelles that were produced in 1970? Under the hood of this Cortez silver icon is the 450 horse 454ci that is backed by an M22 four speed. That combination makes the Posi a “must-have”, and the 3.31-geared rearend makes it drivable. This bombshell comes with power steering, an AM/FM radio with a rear speaker, GM floor mats, and has been subjected to a frame-off restoration.

Lot T83 Super C

Show us a car enthusiast that doesn’t own a truck, and we’ll show you an enthusiast that wants one. Speaking of trucks, who doesn’t like the 67- 72 Chevy trucks? These were the years when Chevrolet started to add a little “comfort” into their workhorses. This last year representative of the style is covered in Olive Green, and it was purchased new at Kerr Chevrolet in Hastings, Nebraska. It came with a 350ci engine and an automatic transmission.8910

Lot S233 Drop Top Heartthrob

There is just something about convertibles that gets our attention. This 1968 SS convertible is even covered in a stunning shade of Nassau Blue. Under the hood is an aluminum-headed 396ci that is followed by a row-your-own transmission. The white folding roof covers the black interior that houses a pair of bucket seats and a console surrounding the floor shifter. Underneath, the car has been upgraded with some modern suspension pieces.11

Lot S198 Get a Nickey

Now this is one cool cruiser. This Nickey-built street monster features a Procharged LS3 with a six-speed manual transmission behind it. This is a Stage II Nickey car, which means that the car has an LS engine with over 600 horsepower (Nickey CNC-ported heads, Nickey Spec. camshaft, custom Nickey intake and fuel rails, and Nickey billet valve covers). Covering the engine is a Nickey exclusive Stinger hood, with functional Ram Air scoop. Finally, the car has a tuned exhaust system, and the Stage II Nickey tuned-suspension. This is car number 16 of the series.141516

Lot T142 Butternut Basics

Old Econobox Novas are real fan favorites around the office. This Butternut Yellow ’66 model comes to you with a 300 horsepower 327ci engine and a four-speed mounted to the back of it. The bucket seat interior looks as good as the day it rolled off the assembly line, and the underside of the car looks as good as the top side. To finish it off, the Red Stripe tires and Rally wheels make this a great looking ride. Man we really wish we could be there.18

Lot F152 Bubble Hood Beaut

In 1967, the Chevelle got a basic redesign and this blue cruiser is a great example. It is a true Super Sport and comes with the requisite 396ci and a T10 four-speed. The shifter has been updated to a Hurst unit, and the engine features a chrome intake and Holley carburetor. Underneath, Wilwood brakes bring this ’67 to a screeching halt. The subtle upgrades to this car make us want to get behind the wheel and keep driving.20

Lot T169 Daytona Darling

Ok, so we have a thing for Chevelles. But, take a look at this gorgeous ’69 model, and tell us we’re nuts. This 325 horse version of a 396ci is backed by a Turbo 400, ending at the 12-bolt rear. A fairly loaded car, this one comes with power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, and a tilt wheel. The Daytona Yellow coupe has a restoration that is only a couple of years old and features a black vinyl top and bucket seats.23

Lot T188 White Hot

If you are looking for a really cool and reliable driver, check out this ’72 Nova. The 17-inch Torque Thrust wheels give it a true hot rod look. The 327ci engine and 350 Turbo transmission give it that hot rod attitude. The White hauler has power disc brakes, Vintage air conditioning, and the new interior gives you bucket seats and a console. The red stripes give it that SS vibe.26

Lot T193 Split Personality

Nothing screams musclecar louder than a split-bumper Camaro! Now, if you take that Camaro and add a few upgraded items like an LS engine with an automatic transmission, Wilwood disc brakes and air conditioning, and finish it off with a new interior and stainless steel exhaust, how could it get any better. Ok, adding the black Torque Thrust wheels did make it better.29
