Rare 1984 Sno Chaser Pickup Is One Of Chevy’s Rarest Trucks

While most of the country is covered with white and fluffy stuff and searching for something cheap to slide into, we felt this would be the perfect time to talk about one of Chevrolet’s rarest options, so far as pickup trucks are concerned. In 1984, Chevrolet introduced a special winter warrior called the Sno Chaser pickup truck. Reportedly available through Midwest dealers as an exclusive order option, it is estimated that just over 2,500 of these unique trucks were made. We’re told there’s even a GMC version built under a different name.

One of the stand-out features of every Sno Chaser is the special fairing that reaches up around the back of the cab. A pair of spotlights peer out over the cab, their usefulness uncertain during those long wintry, nighttime blizzards. Photo credit GR Auto Gallery of Grand Rapids

Everything we can find shows that the Sno Chaser option was offered by dealers and the base truck was ordered with the red and black “Special Paint – “Sno-Chaser” option, an additional $258 charge. The work of completing the entire Sno Chaser trim was reportedly performed after the truck traveled to an upfitter. This is further reinforced by a “Ship Through Freight Charge” present on the one build sheet we’ve witnessed of a Sno Chaser truck that was shipped in January of 1984 — additional cost – $104. From there, a custom truck builder, such as American Coach Corporation, who did another rare pickup titled the “Amarillo GT” may have also finished the Sno Chaser by adding the additional bed fairing, lighting, and decals.

The build sheet for this particular Sno Chaser lists a 5.0-liter gas engine and a four-speed automatic for the drivetrain. It is not mentioned if any other powertrain combo was available in a Sno Chaser package. Photo credit GR Auto Gallery of Grand Rapids

The Sno Chaser option appears to be a sticker and add-on package to the truck’s overall build sheet, so we’re unsure if a heavy-duty version could have been ordered and built. Everything we could find shows them as a half-ton, four-wheel-drive variant of Chevy’s Scottsdale pickup, which would make sense if you’re looking at making tracks in the winter equivalent of a flood.

These trucks were built to brave the snowy challenges of the Midwest and other wintry areas, but as you can imagine, due to the salt and exposure to some of the most inclement weather imaginable, their survival rates are incredibly low today. We’ve never seen one in captivity or the wild back in the day. If you saw one, you’d know it.

Due to the Sno Chaser's intended environment, rust was a major factor in how many trucks exist today. Every vehicle produced by General Motors has an ignition switch to turn them on or off. Rust on the other hand, never rests!

But this special edition truck wasn’t just for show; it was a rare gem designed for those who needed a reliable companion in harsh winter conditions and wanted to make a statement while doing it. The combination of unique features, limited production, and a tough design makes the 1984 Chevrolet Sno Chaser pickup a standout in the history of winter-ready trucks.

Sno Chaser diecast

The styling of the Sno Chaser Chevy truck was appealing enough that diecast versions were created and are possibly more obtainable than the original, full-size truck.

If you owned one of these cool trucks back in the day, let us know. Due to attrition and oxidation from its intended habitat, we may have lost the chance of a breeding pair a LONG time ago, but if you know where there is a surviving example, please let us know. We’d love to see one today. Even more, they’re so cool we’d love to own one!
