hagerty-camaro-1There are unpleasant aspects to any hobby, including driving classic motor cars. In addition to being sometimes difficult to track down parts, when a classic car gets wrecked it can be difficult if not downright impossible to get a regular insurance company to pay the value of your car. That is why there is Hagerty Insurance, a family-owned company that has been insuring collector cars for decades.

Hagerty employees recently embarked on an ambitious team-building project, donating over 2,750 donated man-hours and skipping 215 lunch breaks to repair and restore a 1969 Chevy Camaro that had been in a serious accident.

The team building exercise was meant to both build teamwork among members of the Hagerty company, and to put employees in the shoes of their customers. While the original plan was to restore a 1950s convertible, the “banged-up bad boy” Camaro spoke more to the employees’ passion for wrecked classics.

At a regular repair shop, 2,750 man hours could cost you $27,500 or more, depending on your area and what the shop charges. That is before parts, which took over 900 phone calls to track down in its entirety. Add to that 97 “unforeseen costs” and too-many four-letter swears to count, and you’ve got a great team building exercise from a company that knows classic cars. Now if only we could get our boss to undertake the same sort of project…
