Even though the late Dale Earnhardt Sr has been gone since 2001, a black #3 Chevy is gracing the Daytona 500 again. This time however, piloted by Austin Dillon.
Dillon, age 23, races for Richard Childress Racing. Dillon’s car isn’t sponsored by Goodwrench, but by Dow Chemical. However the car still has its ties to the late Earnhardt’s car as it adorns a black paint job, accented with white and red. Dillon feels the pressure by running a black #3 car as well saying that “everyone wants to see this number perform well. That’s what my goals are — to stay focused.”

Straight from NASCAR.com, this was only Dillon’s 14th time qualifying. Regarding his pole position Dillion says “It’s hard to celebrate, because I know this is just qualifying, but it’s great for (the team). You never know the next time you’ll be standing in this position again. So it’s awesome; just want to thank our family back home at RCR. They’ve done such a good job — fab shop, engine shop, everybody, my guys.”
Naturally, there are people thinking this has to be a conspiracy or set up. Doubters are thinking this might be some sort of publicity stunt that the Frances family had a hand in, to get you to watch the race. They compared this to Danica winning the pole in years past.
Whatever the case may be, it takes a lot of work and an incredible amount of skill to pilot a car and be competitive, let alone win a pole. The true test if this is a coincidence will come out when the green flag drops!
We hope the best for Dillon and his Daytona race. All Earnhardt fans are cheering to see another black #3 Chevy clench the 500!
