When working on a car, most people think of screw drivers, wrenches and sockets. Most people don’t associate a hammer as being a used tool when turning wrenches.
Having several versions of hammers are a great tool to have in the garage. These can help force things into place, or bust things out of their home during disassembly. When taking apart suspension, these are the perfect tools for busting apart tie rods and ball joints. But with so many variations of hammers out there, which one is best for the job? Here’s our top three choices for hammers:
Ball Peen Hammer
These hammers have a smooth face, with a ball backside. This is a basic go to hammer that can be used to gently tap parts that are stuck, or when driving hard parts into place like a control arm. If you’re doing body work, this hammer can come in handy as well to move metal where you need it. These are light weight and for light duty jobs, as they don’t have any considerable amount of weight behind them for heavy swinging.

Mini Sledge Hammer
These mini sledge hammers are generally three pounds. They are perfect for working on cars as they are still compact, but pack a punch with the extra weight. This would be the perfect hammer for breaking apart tie rods and ball joints, or for a really stubborn bolt.
Rubber Mallet
Mallets are a really handy hammer as well. The large soft face is perfect for tapping on things that need some convincing to move, like a stuck intake manifold. When using a hammer to tap the back of a screwdriver, these are perfect with the larger head on them. They tend to have a little weight behind them as well, giving them a decent amount of punch.
Since these tools aren’t a speciality tool, they can be found just about anywhere, for a cheap price. There is still the high end versions and bottom of the barrel versions, that all depend on your budget and usage. The only downside to using a hammer is when your finger accidentally gets in the path of travel! Make sure to be aware of your fingers when using hammers.
