A bill aimed at reforming the Ethanol Mandate was introduced in the US House of Representatives. The bill, HR 704, has bipartisan support and has two aims. First it will prohibit the sale of 15-percent Ethanol gasoline (E15). Next, it will eliminate the mandate that 15 billion gallons of Ethanol be blended into the fuel supply available to US consumers every year that is part of the Renewable Fuel Standard. This is good news for lovers of older cars since E15 can damage them.

Ethanol has been shown to cause premature corrosion to metal parts, and dissolve certain rubber and plastic parts; especially in older cars that haven’t been retrofitted with materials that are more compatible with Ethanol. House Resolution 704 protects our older vehicles, by eliminating the Ethanol requirements. The bill even protects those cars that have been upgraded, because “Ethanol compatibility” only prolongs the inevitable corrosion and dissolution caused by ethanol.
