Lee Shepherd didn’t just participate in Pro Stock; he absolutely dominated it. In 1984, he did the unthinkable by sweeping both the NHRA and IHRA championships in a single season, a feat that cemented the Reher-Morrison team as legends of the sport. The car that carried him to those victories, this authentic 1984 Chevrolet Camaro race car, is now heading to auction, offering collectors a chance to own one of the most significant doorslammers in drag racing history.

Heart Of The 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Race Car
The Reher-Morrison engine shop in Texas was famous for finding horsepower where others couldn’t, and this car packs their signature punch. A massive 498-cubic-inch Old Smokey V8 sits between the frame rails, breathing through a high-rise intake and dual four-barrel carburetors. Large Cyclone headers handle the exhaust duties. It’s a raw, mechanical setup that requires a skilled hand to operate. The pilot has to manage a manually shifted transmission with a multi-disc clutch, banging gears through a classic Hurst four-stick Lightning Rod shifter setup that defined the ’80s Pro Stock cockpit.

A Chassis Built To Win
Hidden beneath the fiberglass body and detachable front clip is a complex spider chassis. The builders utilized nearly 220 feet of tubing to create a rigid, safe structure capable of handling the immense torque of that big-block. The suspension setup features a four-link rear with coilovers and wheelie bars to keep the frontend down, while Lamb struts and a rack-and-pinion steer the car. Every inch of the chassis was designed with one goal: getting down the quarter-mile faster than anyone else.

Restored To Race Glory
Restored to its as-raced specifications, it wears the iconic red and white Reher-Morrison livery and sits on two-piece wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle racing tires. The current owner has cared for the vehicle since 1988, preserving its condition and provenance for over three decades. It serves as a time capsule to a golden era of naturally aspirated drag racing.

Crossing The Block At Mecum Kissimmee
Owning a championship-winning car is rare; owning one that took home two major titles in one year is almost unheard of. This historic machine represents the height of Lee Shepherd’s career. The 1984 Chevrolet Camaro race car will cross the auction block at Mecum Kissimmee on Saturday, January 17, sold on a bill of sale to the next custodian of Pro Stock history.
