More than a few of us once harbored dreams of becoming a race car driver. We’re not just talking about drag racing either, but serious round-the-track endurance racing in purpose-built race cars. Whether are racing heroes were Speed Racer or Bob Bounderant, we all just wanted to go fast (to paraphrase the great and fictional NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby.)
Time may pass, but those dreams never really die. So this might be the day you decide to pursue that dream. A good start might be the purchase of this IMSA World Sportscar Championship Chevy-powered race car up on eBay. A lot of well-known drivers have been behind the wheel of this car, and so can you for a cool $219,000.
This car has meticulous documentation and there are no question marks in its history. Originally fielded in 1990 to compete in Group C at the height of its popularity, this particular racer was sold to Spice USA in 1993. Group C was dismantled soon after due to a lack of entries.
It was purchased by Scandia Motorsports and had an $80,000 kit installed to turn it into an open-cockpit racer. A Sawzall would have been just as effective we think, but no one said owning a race car would be cheaper.
It was at this point that an all-aluminum Chevy V8 was installed, and it was raced for half a season before being replaced by a Ferrari, though not before setting the fastest lap time of the day at the 1994 12 Hours at Sebring. It was also the first WSC car to hold position at the 1994 24 Hours at Daytona.
After 1994 it was sold to Bobby Brown Racing, retired in 2000, and since changed hands. Why not buy it, take it out of retirement, and put this car back on the track where it belongs? It has undergone a complete restoration, so its ready and raring to go. It’d be a good start to a new career in motorsports. Or maybe just another piece for your fantasy collection. Either way, a very cool Chevy race car.
