When it comes to the art of drag racing, reaction time is a vital component for overall track time and performance. With a bad reaction time, you could potentially lose against an inexperienced driver or a slower car. While good reaction times don’t always guarantee a race win, they do increases your chance of success in events and make you a better competitor. Recently, Dan Carter, competitor at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals, showed just how important reaction times are when he raced his Chevy through several rounds before he was narrowly beat during the final round by microseconds.

Carter has been racing for 29 years, piloting the same ‘69 Camaro Z28 his entire career. While admittedly a rather conservative racer for the most part, Carter took a suggestion to be more aggressive in his launch to heart after his friend and fellow driver, Dan Fletcher, told Carter he wouldn’t make it through another round without a more aggressive reaction time. Thanks to his more aggressive approach with his reaction time, Carter went four rounds and got a buy-out in round five. He then lost to Scotty Rienschield in round six, although he had a quicker reaction time.

While he didn’t win at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals, Carter is still excited about his success at the event- and we don’t blame him. For anyone to be able to participate in the event and then go five rounds is an impressive feat. It just goes to show just how good of a drag racer Carter is.

While other racers have teams that do everything to keep their cars running strong, Carter does all of his own preventative  maintenance car, which is rather impressive in a time where it seems that the bigger and better you are at what you do, the more people you have helping you do it. We can’t forget to mention that Carter does have the advantage of using superior parts, like the K&N engine filters he always puts on his car. We’re excited to see Carter’s success at the O’Reilly NHRA Nationals and wish him luck in his future races. Thanks goes out to K&N Air Filters for bringing us the news of Carter and his success.
