To show their support for the green movement, GM is stepping up to become more reliant on renewable energy and reduce their carbon footprint. Not only are hybrid cars being created by the manufacturer, now solar-powered charging stations are being put in at several dealerships across the country. Not only will these new stations be able to charge hybrid cars, they will also serve as a source of energy for other electrical needs of the dealerships. Thanks to Chevrolet in the News for bringing us the latest on GM’s green technology.

The installation of these solar charging stations is being called the Green Zone Initiative. It is part of GM’s plans to invest $7.5 million in the solar power and development company, Sunlogics, that is in charge of supplying and installing the solar charging stations. Al Serra Auto Plaza in Grand Blanc, Michigan and American Chevrolet in Modesto, California will be the first two dealerships of the two dozen planned to receive their completely solar charging stations. Each station is capable of fully charging 12 vehicles a day and will be used to supplement other dealership electrical needs with any excess energy.

The building of these solar charging stations, as well as the installation of solar roofs on other dealerships and the solar field being installed at the Detroit-Hamtramck facility, are meant to give GM the flexibility to use different energy sources and reduce their reliance on energy that can’t be reused. The Green Zone Initiative is also meant to serve as an example for the local community and inspire more environmentally-friendly practices.

We commend GM for stepping up and increasing their reliability on renewable energy. We look forward to seeing these solar powered charging stations pop up at more and more dealerships across the country.
