When Chevrolet stopped the production of the Camaro after the 2002 model year, many muscle car enthusiasts were disappointed. Not only did discontinuation of the model mark the end of one of the most well known muscle cars, it also marked a pseudo loss to the car’s arch rival-the Ford Mustang. Fortunately for us Chevy muscle car people, Chevrolet came to its senses and began manufacturing the fifth generation Camaro for the 2010 model year. Not only is it back to stay, the Camaro is also making notable production strides, proving it still deserves a place in the modern muscle car lineup.
After outselling the Mustang last year by over 7,500 units, we expected great things from the Camaro. Recently, Chevrolet in the News reported that the 225,844th fifth generation Camaro was sold, marking an impressive 5 million total Camaros sold in the life of the car’s production. The car that helped mark this sales milestone was sold to a customer in Kentucky. It was a black-on-black V6 1LS coupe with a six-speed manual transmission.
With the recent addition of the convertible and next year’s release of the ZL1, the most powerful Camaro that Chevrolet has ever produced, Camaro sales are expected to continue on an upward slope. This is good news for Camaro and Chevrolet fans, but we must share our condolences with Ford. Unfortunately for the rival company, their biggest muscle car competitor is alive and well, and it isn’t backing down any time soon!
