Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably heard all the news about the latest Hellcat Hemi Challenger. This factory muscle car has 707 horsepower thanks to a supercharged 392 cubic inch Hemi. The claims have been that it will run high 10’s, right off the showroom floor. The best part is that the Hellcat is priced under $60,000. How does the Camaro ZL1 stack up?
For comparison, the Camaro ZL1 has 580 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2 liter(roughly 378 cubic inches) motor. Pricing is a hair less than $56,000, a few thousand cheaper than the Hellcat. If you want to go a step further we can look at the Z/28 which has less horsepower at 505, but is a naturally aspirated 7.0 liter. But for more of an apples to apples comparison, the ZL1 is a good match for the Hellcat. The ZL1 is good for high 11’s or low 12-seconds in the quarter mile. Could the Hellcat be the demise of the Camaro ZL1?
Hold your horses. We found this video online from Bangshift showing the Hellcat running a low 12 second run- that’s a far cry from high 10 seconds. Right off the bat the original run was done at sea level with nice air, on drag radials. The run in the video is done at high altitude, starving the motor for air. So yes, the numbers are skewed. But even still, is the hype with the Hellcat Hemi worth it? Or would you rather stick with a Camaro?
