The ways to lose a drag race are practically limitless, but having both rear wheels fly off your car before the 60-foot cone is an interesting one. During the Trackmania event at Memphis International Raceway a week ago, John Tyler experienced the loss of both rear drive wheels on his Monte Carlo during a grudge race. His little flight gives new meaning to the phrase “blowing the tires off” at the track, for sure!
Tyler put his Monte Carlo SS, known as “Silent Killer Jr.,” in the beams against another Monte Carlo known as the “Black Blur” for a $3,800 grudge race. Both cars sound pretty healthy and are rocking a set of 24-inch wheels, along with an undisclosed amount of nitrous.
This race had the makings of a close battle until things went wrong in a hurry for Tyler after the tree dropped.
In this footage from Veltboy314 you can see that both cars left strong and were on a pass until the wheels came off for Tyler, literally. In what looks like a scene from a Michael Bay action movie, the rear wheels shear off at the studs and the forward momentum of the car causes it to run over the wheels and tires and launch the rear of Tyler’s car several feet into the air. After its backward wheelstand, the car then spun around and ended up facing the wrong way in the middle of the track. Thankfully his opponent was long gone so he didn’t collect him, as well.
