Glam rocker and Poison front man Bret Michaels has had his share of automotive fever. Who could forget one of his earliest close calls with death when he crashed his Ferrari into a telephone pole in the mid 90’s?
Honing his music career in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, it was inevitable that Michaels’ life would be intertwined with automobiles. His 2008 music video “Driven” features a classic 1969 Camaro coupe SS with black rally stripes at the beginning and end of the video. Michaels’ ends the video by saying, “Hey, if there’s one thing Bret knows, big hair and this sweet ride, we’re sure to meet lots of women. Trust me bro.”
The 1969 Camaro SS Custom Coupe was featured on “MTV Cribs”, “Rock of Love” and Michaels’ “Driven” video.
We all know that “every rose has it’s thorn” and Michaels must have found the thorn in classic car ownership. He put the Custom Coupe up for auction in Barrett-Jackson’s auction.
Featuring a 383ci SBC with a 700R4 automatic transmission, the coupe rolled across the Barrett-Jackson stage in Scottsdale, Arizona, with the promise to “make you feel like a rock star.”
Car details from the video:
- 383 SBC Stroker
- 700R4 Auto Trans
- 12 bolt rear end
- MSD ignition
As the auction rolled up from $10,000, the bidding stalled at $85,000. Michaels offered a black bandana to the auction winner and the bid went to $100,000. Michaels then explained that a one-of-a-kind guitar and lifetime backstage passes to Poison/Bret Michaels concerts were included in the package.
Right after the announcement of those additional goodies, a bidding war erupted driving the price up to $150,000 where it stalled.
According to Bret Michaels, in addition to the car being featured in several cable TV shows, “This car has a lot of history… some of which I can’t tell you about right now…”
With that hint that maybe Pamela Anderson had spent some backseat time in the car, the bidding escalated to $200,000 where it was finally sold.
