There is no getting around the fact that swapping out the rear suspension is an involved process. But, it’s actually not as overwhelming as it might seem – assuming you’re comfortable doing some welding.
When Chevrolet first introduced the COPO Camaro in 2011, the fifth-generation Camaro was the canvas for an all-new, factory-built NHRA Stock Eliminator drag car. As a tribute to the COPO of yesteryear, Chevrolet only produces 69 of these cars each year, making them not only unobtainium, but very expensive.
The video showcases Moser’s through-bolt design aluminum rearend case. This is not only one of the strongest units on the market, but is also helps shve weight. The case is made of 206-T4 aluminum with 7075-T6 aluminum caps and billet steel adjusters.
That’s where our latest project, True SStreet comes into play. Since we couldn’t find enough credit cards to cover the cost of a real COPO Camaro, we decided to build something close, hence Project True SStreet. Before we could begin building our project car, we needed to find one. we were fortunate enough to locate a 2014 Camaro that was the remains of a theft recovery. The car was within our price range because thieves stole the engine, transmission, most of the interior, and the wheels. The original owner’s unfortunate loss is our gain.

When it came time for rearend upgrades, there really was no upgrade available, that would make the independent rearend survive the abuse we were are planning to throw at the car. Luckily, we found that Moser Engineering makes a solid axle conversion for the fifth-gen Camaro that was exactly what we needed, and you can see the complete install by clicking here.
Although the stock Camaro IRS is a great setup for car used for everyday getting around town, there is no way that it can survive serious drag strip competition for very long. Moser’s solid rear axle conversion provides unbelievable durability to stand up to high horsepower applications, and, it has the adjustability to tailor the rear suspension to specific combinations and needs.
Moser Engineering’s Jeff Anderson says, “Although it was initially designed for NHRA Stock Eliminator class racing, it can be adapted for other classes or uses as well, including extreme high-horsepower street cars that are more interested in straight-line performance than cornering. It was designed so that only minimal modifications are required as compared to other designs in the market, and comes with all the adjustability you need, right out of the box.”
In order to make sure the axles can withstand the hard launches, a set of custom-alloy, 35-spline axles are used.

Although a complete R&R of the rear suspension is an involved process, it’s actually not as overwhelming a job as it might seem – as long as you’re comfortable doing some cutting and welding. This conversion package is designed to replace the entire independent rear cradle assembly, which means you not only have to remove the exhaust, fuel tank and lines, but a few assorted sheetmetal crossmembers and bracing, to allow for the installation.
