On this installment of Tool-Time Tuesday we go over another handy shop tool, the Dremel. These handy tools pack a punch and can make quick work of lots of jobs.
The Dremel is a rotary tool that has been around for over 50 years. They are small and compact in size, great for small jobs. Dremels come in both corded and battery powered versions, making them versatile. Instead of having a large electric motor with a lot of torque, they have a small motor that spins high RPM to accomplish tasks. These small motors can spin anywhere from 3,000 to 30,000 RPM to accomplish the tasks at hand.
With a host of attachments, the Dremel can be configured for hundreds of different uses. With the quick change of a bit, you can go from a cut off wheel to a sanding drum in a seconds.
Why do you need one in your tool box? They are perfect for working on cars. If you have a rusted bolt that needs to be cut in a tight place, grab that Dremel. Swap the head and you can use it to polish small pieces, like an emblem. If you need to just slightly bore out a hole you’ve drilled for a perfect fit, a sanding attachment will make easy work of it. Another great use for the Dremel is for porting and polishing your intake.
When you’re looking to purchase a Dremel, there is lots of options for them. There is the actual name brand Dremel, but there is other companies making similar products as well. You’ll also want to determine if a corded or battery version is ideal for your application. After you determine brand and style, you will have to figure out what accessories to get with the Dremel as well. As always, wear eye protection!
